The 1935 Hsinchu-Taichung Earthquake

The 1935 Hsinchu-Taichung earthquake (ML7.1) occurred at 6:02 a.m. on April 21, 1935 with the epicenter located at the midstream area of theTa-an River about 3 km south-southeast of Guandaoshan mountain in southern Hsin-Chu County. The mainshock was associated with two faults 30 km apart; one was the 20km-long Shihtan Fault at Shihtan Village, Dahu District in Hsinchu County, the other was the 12 km-long Tuntzuchiao Fault at Neipu Village, Fengyuan District in Taichung County. A large scale ground deformation was found in this earthquake. In the Guandaoshan mountain and its vicinity, which lie in between the two faults, several large-scale subsidences were found in the Shibikeng of Dungshih District and Dahu Village and a massive landslide was found at Dawo in the Miaoli County. Furthermore, according to the field surveys, eruption of sand and underground water can be found in the alluvium of the Jhonggang River and its branches, especially in both sides of the Emei River. Many sand boils were found at Laotianliao in Touwu Village.
